SPORTS TV WEEKEND - Chicago Sun-Times

Rich King has made it official, agreeing to a multi-year contractwith WBBM-TV to join Johnny Morris and Howard Sudberry. Thelong-time WBBM radio sportscaster will be a reporter with some backupanchor work Rich King beginning the first week in April.

King's hiring will free Jeannie Morris to concentrate on specialprograms. 'We were really working shorthanded for a long time,'Morris said. 'We only have Johnny, Howard and myself and I don't doany anchoring, so we really needed an anchor-reporter. Rich is a guyI have been trying to get in here a long time. He's a real goodreporter.'

WMAQ radio (670-AM) rounded out its sports staff this week withthe addition of Steve Olken, sports director at WJOL (1340-AM) inJoliet. He has worked with the other WMAQ sports anchors - RonGleason, who recently left WBBM radio, and Tom Greene.

HOCKEY: WBBM (780-AM) will not carry Tuesday's Black Hawks gameagainst St. Louis because of election night coverage. But liveupdates from the Checkerdome will be provided throughout the game,which begins at 7:30 p.m.

With no radio outlet for the game, SportsVision decided to carryTuesday's Hawks and Bulls games, billing it 'Super TWOsday.' Thenetwork will begin airing the Bulls-Cleveland game at 7 p.m., thenswitch to Dale Tallon and Pat Foley for live updates once the Hawksbegin. The Hawks will be shown during the Bulls' halftime and cut toimmediately after the Bulls game. When the Hawks finish,SportsVision will rerun their complete game.

BOXING: Jose Luis Ramirez (100-6, 82 KOs) will battle PernellWhitaker (15-0, nine KOs) in a WBC lightweight title bout scheduledfor 12 rounds tomorrow as part of ABC's 'Wide World of Sports' (Ch.7, 3:30 p.m.). HBO's Barry Tompkins has resigned, citing limited play-by-playopportunities offered at the cable network. Tompkins had been withHBO for nine years. Jim Lamp-ley will replace him for boxing eventsand in hosting Wimbledon coverage along with various other sportsspecials. Lampley's first assignment will be March 20 when he callsthe Mike Tyson-Tony Tubbs bout.

BASEBALL: The Cubs make their 1988 television debut Sunday (Ch.9, 2 p.m.) vs. Seattle. The game also will be broadcast on WGN radio(720-AM). The Cubs' other weekend exhibitions can be heard on radio- tonight at 7 vs. Oakland and tomorrow vs. Milwaukee (joined inprogress after the DePaul game at approximately 3 p.m.). The White Sox can be heard on WMAQ (670-AM) playing the Yankeestoday, Pirates tomorrow and Twins Sunday - all at 12:30 p.m.

BOWLING: PBA Hall of Famer Earl Anthony will compete againstBrian Voss and Walter Ray Williams Jr. tomorrow (Ch. 7, 1:30 p.m.) in'Make that Spare' preceding the $270,000 PBA National Championship (2p.m.).

Following the spare contest, Randy Pedersen will defend histitle against Marshall Holman and Joe Berardi, among others. Holmanor Berardi could complete a career triple crown performance with awin.

Only two bowlers have won all three triple crown events - thePBA National Championship, BPAA U.S. Open and Firestone Tournament ofChampions. Johnny Petraglia won the PBA National Championship in1980 to cap his triple crown; Billy Hardwick completed his in 1969.No bowler has won all three in the same year.
